Five Member Benefits

Can you name five benefits you receive as a member of the Hanover Consumer Cooperative Society? Can you name ten? How about fifteen?
Let’s start with five this time around and continue the list in future issues.

Discounts on Co-op services including infant car seat rentals and cooking classes
Anyone can rent a car seat at the Co-op to take a premature baby home from the hospital, avoid investing in an infant car seat that will quickly be outgrown, or protect a visiting toddler. But as a Co-op member, you can rent one for as little as $10 total!

No little kids in your household, you say? You don’t have to be a parent to find yourself in need of an infant or toddler seat. With our rental program, your friends or family don’t have to sacrifice limited baggage space on their next flight by carrying a car seat. You’ll be a hero, and at very little cost!

As for our Co-op classes, pick up a copy of our new class list for autumn and check out the great selection of cooking, gardening, craft, and health-oriented offerings. Even if you never make another appetizer or plant a perennial garden, these classes are a fun evening out at a very reasonable members-only price.

Use of the Co-op Lending Library
Our lending library on the second floor of the Hanover Co-op Food Store includes books, videos, and magazines on cooking, nutrition, health, gardening, environmental concerns, cooperatives, and more. Only Co-op members may sign out materials, which they can keep for two weeks and renew as desired.

Opportunity to Voice Your Opinions Knowing They Will Be Heard!
How many times have you wanted to let a store owner know how you feel about the service (or lack thereof) that you just received, but you don’t bother because you know it will go unheard? As a Co-op member you are a store owner, and you can influence store policy in several ways. Members vote for the twelve Directors who their store and also vote on major issues that affect the organization. Members are welcomed and encouraged to attend Board meetings, to join working committees, and to actively participate in focus groups and membership meetings as they occur.

Volunteer Opportunities
Co-op members have the opportunity to personally participate as much or as little as they want in community outreach programs and events organized by Co-op staff. Member volunteers raise food for local shelters, distribute surplus produce and day-old bakery to social service agencies, serve as ballot clerks during elections, and participate in community-oriented Education Department events.

Extended Check-Cashing Privileges
Non-members can cash checks at the registers only for the amount of their purchase, but as a member you have extended check-cashing privileges, including paychecks, two-party checks, and receiving up to $100 over the cost of goods purchased. And all you need is your Co-op member number, with no further identification required!
