First Annual Walkathon a Success

The Hanover Cooperative Community Fund

Hanover Co-op Honored by Its Peers

At the national conference of the Consumer Cooperative Management Association held in Chicago in June, 2001, the Hanover Consumer Cooperative Society was awarded the Cooperative Excellence Retailer of the Year Award.

Please note:
Co-op Board member Marcy Marceau has resigned her seat on the Board effective in September. The Board does not have any plans at this time to fill the vacated position.

General Manager Terry Appleby accepted the award given "In recognition of a retail cooperative that has made significant progress in meeting the needs of members through growth in net sales and earnings, initiation of new and innovative programs, and expansion of member services."

In nominating Hanover for the award, cooperative consultant Karen Zimbelman wrote:

"Meeting members’ needs is the core of what [Hanover Co-op] does and how it conducts business. It has carried forward the best of the "old wave" co-op practices—being close to members, making service to members the foremost thought in all employees’ minds and in the co-op’s policies, and [providing] clear, honest communications to members.

"But the Hanover Co-op has also integrated new retail and human resource practices into its operations… The co-op’s stores are vibrant and its practices dynamic and relevant in today’s world. Their consumer information materials are some of the best to be found. They have contributed in countless ways to many other co-op organizations and collaborative projects regionally and nationally. Our entire co-op movement is richer for their fine work and dedication."

The award came on the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Hanover Co-op.

Management, staff, and board members of over 100 food co-ops nationwide as well as other cooperative entities were in attendance at the conference.

First Annual Walkathon a Succes

On Sunday, September 9th, employees of the Co-op’s Lebanon store held their first annual walkathon to raise money for the Hanover Cooperative Community Fund. Seven employees and their families walked seven miles around Mascoma Lake to raise $1,200 for the fund. Afterwards, the group convened at the home of Lebanon store manager, Bob Hayes, for a barbecue.

Team members were Amy Ballou; Linda Chase; Helen Daisey; Bob Hayes; Lisa Kendall and her son, Kyle; Mark Romano and his children, Sarah and Eric; Debbie Town and her children, Johnny and Rebecca; and Jody Wescott and her children, Josh and Amber.

Thank you to all who helped to make this such an outstanding success!
