Wheat Woes
With two family members unable to eat anything with wheat, do you have, or could you compile, a list of wheatless items —bread, for example — that are wheat-free?
— M.C., South Royalton, VT

To find some of the wheat-free foods at the Co-op, you can begin with our "Living Gluten-Free" pamphlet available at the Education Department display near the entrance in the Hanover store and in the brochure rack near the entrance in the Lebanon store.

I would encourage you to take a grocery store tour with me to help to identify the wheat-free products you could have on hand when wheat-intolerant family members visit. We don’t have a complete list of wheat-free foods (which would constantly be changing as we add and subtract products), but we can start you on your way to recognizing them more easily.

Please call me at (603) 643-2667 ext. 3406 to schedule a tour or for more information.

Resealing Safety Seals
You have been using new safety seal containers for things such as cheeses and olives. They are really difficult to reseal if you don’t use all the product at once. Can you use something different please?
—D.B., Etna, NH

We switched to the new containers to provide a tamper-proof seal. Our purpose is to ensure customers a product that has not been opened by others to smell, taste, or feel the olives, cheese, or other food item. This was our experience with containers that were easy to open and gave no indication that they had been entered (except by personal observation of the Cheese clerks).

You are probably not opening the containers as intended, because when opened properly, they reseal and form a leak-proof cover quite easily. Feel along the ridge until you find the small snap-out piece that breaks off. The lid edge will be behind it and can now be lifted to open the container. To reseal it, simply replace the lid and press down as you would with any round plastic container top.

Please stop by the Cheese Department or the Service Desk for a demonstration. We’ll be happy to show you the advantages of our new containers.

Kids Can Cook
My family was wondering if you could have some children’s cooking classes. Thanks.
—Rosalie, Age 10

We have offered children’s cooking classes in the past, but our experience has been that they do not attract enough students and we have to cancel them. However, we like the idea and would be willing to consider it again. Can you suggest some topics that would interest you or an instructor? You can reach me by e-mail at elizabeth@coopfoodstore.com or by phone at (603) 643-2667 ext. 3119.

Ingredients Inquiry
Please label ingredients in your prepared foods.
—M.B., Hanover, NH

We are currently working on a system that will allow us to not only provide ingredient labels but will also give nutrition information for our dishes. Please bear with us as we work out the details. In the meantime, feel free to ask the staff behind the counter about the ingredients in any dish in our cases.
