organic agriculture feeds the soil

Organic means "derived from living organisms."

Many people define organic in terms of what it is not, such as "no synthetic pesticides." But do you know what organic is?

Whether they’re raising crops in a garden plot or on a farm, organic growers feed the soil. Soil is the foundation of the food chain. Feeding the soil with organic matter is a long-term investment in soil fertility – for this year’s harvest and future harvests, too.

compost

Compost is rich in soil-building nutrients. Compost is made from decomposed plant matter and manure. Think of the compost pile as the gardener's or farmer's recycling bin!

Soil that is consistently fertilized with petroleum by-products is low in organic matter and life forms. Notice the light color, sandy texture, and sterile appearance.
