| A
small family business
Every spring, when the salmon come home from their ocean
journeys, we pack-up and move to a small bay in Alaska’s
Prince William Sound. Our neighbors are the sea lions, eagles,
and a couple of curious black bears. With our two young
kids and a few hard-working crew-hands, we spend the summer
fishing—one of our boats is always running to town,
bringing fresh shipments to the airport.
Why we fish
We chose this business because it is environmentally sustainable,
and it keeps us out doors and on the water. Lisa came to
fishing from a career in field biology—she has worked
in (among other places) Prince William Sound and the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge. Lee has spent many summers commercial
fishing, and has also worked in child-protection advocacy,
and in rural community fisheries development.
Quality instead of volume
Most seafood companies buy their fish from other fishermen.
At Glacier Creek we are the fishermen. We select the best
fish from our catch, and within hours they are ready for
shipping. Glacier Creek ships the freshest, highest quality
wild salmon you can buy.
Filling
a niche
Salmon fishermen today are competing with big, industrialized
fish farms (many of which are foreign, subsidized operations).
So most salmon fishermen are getting 50 to 70% less for
their harvest than they did a decade ago.
But the highest quality, freshest wild salmon will always
be cherished for its flavor and health benefits, and for
the environmental soundness of its harvest.
So at Glacier Creek we chill and ship our own catch, catering
to the specialty market that demands quality. Glacier Creek
salmon is the freshest, highest quality salmon you can get.
We sell our fish only through a few carefully selected regional
distributors (see our Distributors
page), and through a small, web-based direct sales program.
