Cheryl favors protection of the rights contained in the
United States Constitution’s Bill of Rights. She is
committed to the preservation of free speech, and the right
of citizens to privacy. A speech Cheryl delivered
to newly naturalized American Citizens can be found
HERE.
Recently with the Passage of the so called “Patriot
Act”, and its implementation by Bush’s Attorney
General, some of these rights are under direct attack. Cheryl
is concerned about recent reports that the Department of
Homeland Security has asked local law enforcement agencies
to begin tracking people who have “expressed dislike
of attitudes and decisions of the US Government.”
Cheryl is committed to speaking out and opposing efforts
to stifle legitimate opposition and dissent. She believes
such efforts are diverting resources away from the real
war on terror. Cheryl is disturbed about recent reports
of violence toward peaceful protesters at a recent trade
meeting in Florida, and believes that the right to peaceful
protest is being threatened.
Cheryl has already spoken out as being in opposition to
the collection of information about citizens through bookstores
and libraries. Cheryl has spoken out strongly against the
recent action by John Ashcroft to subpoena the private medical
records of women.
When Cheryl served in the State Senate she worked with
Attorney General William Sorrell to successfully resist
a strong lobbying effort to allow widespread sharing of
information by insurance companies and banks of personal
information without securing permission from their customers.
Vermont needs a Lieutenant Governor committed to preserving
our basic freedoms, including the right of all women to
make their own decisions about their own bodies and their
destinies. Cheryl is fully pro choice, believes government
not be intervening between the decisions made between women
and their health care provider on issues of reproductive
freedom.
