The Introduction

Cheryl was introduced by her young friend Nova Robinson

Nova is a senior at Whitcomb High School where she is President of the Student Council and, valedictorian of her class. She is also Vermont’s Junior Miss, and a former Legislative Page.  She lives with her parents in Bethel.  She is currently working on a project to increase voter registration and participation among young people.

Here are her remarks . . .

I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to introduce Cheryl Rivers who has been an inspiration to me.

I first met this dynamic leader while I was in Girl Scouts. My troop was working to raise awareness of the importance of voting and women’s suffrage.

I called Mrs. Rivers to ask if she would accompany us in the Bethel Forward Festival parade as a role model of a successful woman who had made many contributions to her community through her political work.

I remember that she said yes…..without hesitation she said yes!

As I marched along side Mrs. Rivers she taught me how to do the politician wave. but the most important lesson that I learned that day was about voting. Mrs. Rivers taught all of the girls in my Girl Scout troop that even young people can affect the face of politics. Each girl in my troop took this lesson with them as we grew up.

Some of us became legislative pages.

Others volunteered in local political campaigns. Most importantly we all have registered to vote or plan to when we reach 18.

The time that Cheryl took to march with us in 2000 sparked the interest of young people in politics and made it clear that legislation affects lives. She instilled in us at an early age that lifelong interest in politics is essential to becoming a global citizen. Cheryl Rivers is the type of leader who reaches out to young people. Cheryl is an inspiration to me and to other young women in Bethel and I am confident she will be an inspiring leader for young people all over the state. It is without further ado that I introduce to you Mrs. Cheryl Rivers!
